Jacob has by no means been a great sleeper but 2 wakings in the night was bearable. The past week the same has been happening...tired really early- asleep by 8 sleeps for a couple hours and then disturbed sleep for the rest of the night. He tends to toss and turn and whimper and then around 3-4 he wakes up properly crying and won't settle back down. He's straining and it's definitely gas. I'm wondering why this has started happening and what can I do? I bought some gripe water on amazon last night at 3 as I was really desperate. I'm exhausted! Help please!

Hey hun, could it be a slight food intolerance? Dairy seems to be the most common, so it may be worth cutting dairy from his diet just for a week or so to see if it makes a difference. If it does make a difference, you could introduce a bit of dairy again and if the problem starts again it'll probably be that. If dairy isn't the culprit it could be gluten, so you could do the same thing with that and seeing if it helps. On the other hand, he could just be coming up to a developmental milestone - babies tend to wake a bit more at night (usually for milk) when they're learning new things. And are you co-sleeping? I found that bringing Jess in with me for milk on-tap meant that we both got more sleep, so may be something to think about if you're not already doing it. Hope that helps hun, and hope you can get some sleep soon xxx

Yeah I've cut him back to breastmilk and fruit/veg for now and will introduce foods one by one to see if I notice a difference. When he wakes he's not hungry- it's definitely straining with gas so it might be a food intolerance. As for co-sleeping, I was whilst Matt was away but the bed isn't big enough until we move and are back in our own one again.

Ahhh I see. Have you tried massaging him, just to try to move the gas to one end or the other? Putting him on his right side and rubbing the left side of his tummy apparently helps, something to do with the physiology of the stomach that lying on your right side helps the gas to shift where it's meant to go. If none of that works I'd probably be inclined to take him to the GP just to see if there's an underlying problem that can be looked into. xx
